The buildingSMART Data Dictionary (bSDD) is an online library of building objects and their attributes. Its goal is to establish global standards for BIM object types (such as windows or doors) and their properties (such as width and height).
This is intended to allow, for example, an object type (such as a door) to be defined globally and uniquely—regardless of the local language (see example). The names of the objects and their properties can thus be stored in every conceivable language, yet they remain uniquely defined. (This is technically made possible by so-called GUIDs.)
The advantage of a globally standardized labeling system for objects and their attributes allows software manufacturers to define specific objects based on these standards and to develop relevant interfaces for data transfer. The bSDD is based on ISO 12006-3.
Incidentally, the bSDD also serves as the technical foundation for the Austrian Merkmalserver. It used to be called the bSDD International Framework for Dictionaries, or IFD for short.
